A perspective to consider is that memes are just ads; with no greater power than a full-page ad in a magazine in the days of yore.

People have just been convinced to buy the "product" depicted or alluded to, partly through confirmation bias, partly because these images have been given far greater credit for power than they've ever deserved.

Viewed in that light (which infuriates their makers and press agents, btw), they are reduced to their essence; and deprived of their influence.
