For Eugene
For a long time, Eugene and I had only known each other online. We first met in person at an art show in downtown Manhattan when he visited New York in 2024. We discussed the incredible journey our group of friends had taken over the last few years.
In 2020, Do Not Research was a small chat room. In 2021, we began publishing to the collaborative blog. Eugene was a beloved member of our group from the very beginning. His generosity and wit touched our lives. His posts uniquely inspired us to continue this work. He loved and valued this community—he was loved and valued in return.
Across numerous meme accounts, under variations of the name Do Not Research, Eugene would routinely gather a following of tens of thousands of people. Inevitably, he would be deplatformed, start over from zero and quickly build to a mass audience within a few months time. Eugene did all of this work charitably and anonymously. Over five years, he cultivated an unprecedented following that he led to engage with the work of other young artists. His contributions helped to launch the creative work of nearly four hundred people that collectively publish to the blog today.
In the past five years an international group of friends have had the chance to meet, collaborate and grow together. Many of them were first drawn to Eugene’s irreplaceable humor, style and intelligence. He continues to inspire us.
DNR honored Eugene in a short post back in January of 2024 and published a long form interview with him in September of 2025. Few people have so generously and widely promoted the work of young independent artists. A generation of creatives are in his debt. Our thoughts are with his family and many loved ones.
Each year, Do Not Research publishes an anthology book that reproduces the text contributions from the blog. In loving memory, the 2025 edition is dedicated to Eugene.
In this blog post we’ve included a curated selection of Eugene’s posts, spanning 2021 - 2023, drawn from our archives:
