i'm very conflicted about this piece - almost lost me at the insistence that fantasy/sci-fi pieces of fiction "aren't art at all", as it's incredibly snobbish. art is supposed to provide new ways of seeing the world and connecting concepts and sensations together, which quality fantasy fiction does spectacularly well. you can't look me in the eye and tell me LOTR and "the silmarillion" are less worthy than, say, marques with his magical realism, or that "legacy of kain" is not an exquisite love letter to nietzsche and shakespeare, or that le guin's "the dispossessed" doesn't demonstrate a political understanding deeper than that of many "serious" theorists...

you insightfully describe the utilization of fantasy narratives for political purposes, as a thought-stopper and a grooming tool of sorts. what's lacking however is a look at how fantasy relates to mythology, recurring archetypes, and the idea of a hero's journey. if ancient mythologies deserve to be taken seriously, if we can derive important information about human psychology and culture, if they served as pillars for so many a civilization, and have inspired so many pieces of sEriOuS art... then maybe we can understand fantasy fiction as an aspect of a growing postmodern mythology of no lesser importance. along with critically analyzing it, which is important, we are also embedded IN its fabric. we're ALSO irrational beings who create fetishes and religions out of whatever's at hand, who see the world through archetypes and narratives in order to grasp it. the way we narrate our very lives is a kind of mythology, an autobiography that's a distortion of objective reality. and that's FINE. it's a legitimate part of our minds - and of collective consciousness. depends how it's utilized - or manipulated.

Interesting stuff- I think one link you may have missed specifically with LOTR and Musk, DHS adverts etc is that LOTR imagery was specifcally and deliberately appropriated by Italian neo-fascists around the 1970s to widen their appeal. As something of a neo-fascist international has formed during the late 2010s and 2020s, the idiosyncrasies of these earlier fascist movements have leaked out into the mainstream. Consequently I would say that what for example Musk is doing is at the same time a propaganda strategy aimed at tricking "normies" and a dog whistle aimed at fellow travellers.
